New York Makes One Last Push for Legalizing Cannabis This Spring

Published on

With the end of the spring legislative session just days away, New York lawmakers are making one final push towards legalizing cannabis in the Empire State. The hope is to vote on legalization this Wednesday.

There have been a lot of ups and down for Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and his fight to legalize recreational cannabis in New York. After missing a series of deadlines and failing to broker a deal between key state lawmakers, Cuomo appeared to have largely given up on the possibility of legalizing cannabis this year.

However, a spokesperson for the Senate of New York has confirmed that last-minute discussions between Cuomo and representatives from the state legislature taking place right now in an attempt to push legalization through before the session ends on June 19.

We are discussing legislation and hope to make good progress,” state Senate spokesman Mike Murphy told The New York Post.

If lawmakers can reach a deal by end of day Sunday, the new bill would have just enough time to be voted on by the final day of the session.

Back in May, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes (D) announced that she would be teaming up with Senator Liz Krueger (D) to draft their own legalization bill for New York after Cuomo’s plan failed to gain the support it needed. Their new bill appears to be the one that will could be voted on this Wednesday.

On Friday, Peoples-Stokes revealed the discussion around legalization was going well and that she was even more confident of a path to victory.”

But only time will tell if lawmakers can get enough votes for the bill before the legislative session ends. If successful, New York would become the 12th state to legalize recreational cannabis.
