South Park’ Mocks the Cannabis Industry in Satirical Ad

Published on

South Park’ is well known for satirizing pretty much everything happening in current pop culture, and the cannabis industry is no exception.

Last week, the popular adult cartoon released a satirical ad for their fictional cannabis brand, Tegridy Farms. The mock brand was originally introduced in a South Park’ episode that aired last October on the same day that Canada moved to legalize recreational cannabis nationwide.

The new Tegridy Farms ad takes shots at the current landscape of the cannabis industry by claiming that it’s being run by a bunch of young corporate banker types” who pretend to be interested in repairing the wrongs done by the War on Drugs, but they’re really only interested in making an easy buck for themselves.”

Fuck those guys,” says the video’s narrator. They ain’t got no integrity.”

Some viewers have noted the new Tegridy Farms ad bears some similarity to another high-profile marijuana ad released earlier this year. However, South Park’s video seems to be criticizing the cannabis industry as a whole rather than calling out any one company in particular. And as per the show’s style, the satirical portrait of legal cannabis is way over the top, but nowhere near as controversial as the show’s take on Paris Hilton, movie reboots, Scientology or other cultural phenomena that the show has lampooned over the years. So in some ways, seeing South Park’ mock the cannabis industry shows that marijuana has finally become part of mainstream American culture.

And South Park’ might become part of cannabis culture in the near future. Last week, the show’s team was seen handing out free Tegridy Farms tee shirts at San Diego Comic Con, which led some fans to believe that the fictional brand may be making the jump to the real world in some form in the coming days.

South Park’ creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone bolstered those rumors by launching a Tegridy Farms website where fans can join a mailing list promising to share more info.

So it might not be too long before we find out if Parker and Stone are actually planning to enter the marijuana business, or if this is just one big elaborate joke on cannabis consumers as well as the industry itself.
