Whole Foods CEO Hints at Moving into the Marijuana Market

Published on

America’s largest chain of organic grocery stores is considering a move into the marijuana market. Earlier this week, the Amazon subsidiary suggested that it might add cannabis to its extensive line of organic produce sometime in the future.

During a recent Q&A hosted by The Texas Tribune, Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey said he expects his Texas-based stores as well as others across the country will begin to stock their shelves with marijuana products if the market looks right.

If cannabis is ever passed in Texas, chances are good that grocery stores will be selling that too,” he said. You just never know what happens over time with markets. They change and evolve.”

The comment came after a member of the audience asked Mackey whether or not Whole Foods would consider stocking things like crickets as alternatives to traditional protein sources. Mackey said they would if the market was there. Then he followed that up with his unprompted comment on the growing demand for cannabis products.

When asked about whether customers should expect to find bugs or pot brownies” in their local Whole Foods first Mackey said we’d have to see what happens with markets and the government regulations over time.”

Mackey has expressed support for cannabis legalization in the past, so it may not be a surprise to see him endorsing the product now. Additionally, Whole Foods has listed hemp products as one of the top ten food trends to watch in 2019 on their website.

You probably shouldn’t expect to be picking up organic weed from Whole Foods any time soon though. Mackey made it very clear that there will need to be some big regulatory changes before he jumps in to the marijuana business. However, with a number of pro-cannabis presidential candidates running for election to the Oval Office in 2020, you might not have to wait too long to see cannabis at the grocery store.
