Bernie Sanders Says He’s Proud of States that Legalized Marijuana
Senator Bernie Sanders is one of the biggest champions of marijuana legalization in Congress, and he even takes pride in states who are furthering the cause.
Sanders appeared at a rally in California to support Democratic Representative Barbara Lee in her bid for re-election. The former presidential candidate spoke for about an hour and touched on a number of issues, and of course the topic of marijuana came up. Sanders said he’s proud of states that have legalized cannabis in recent years.
“We have more people in jail than China or any other country on Earth, and we know that a part of that broken criminal justice system has been grotesquely failed so-called War on Drugs,” Sanders said during the rally. “God only knows how many hundreds of thousands of lives have been ruined by people who receive police records for the possession of marijuana. And I am very proud that in my state of Vermont and here in California, we’re making progress by legalizing possession of marijuana and in other parts decriminalizing it.”
That’s all Sanders said at this rally on marijuana. He spent most of the rest of the speech talking about healthcare and other parts of the Trump agenda he disagrees with.
Sanders has long supported legalizing marijuana, even prior to his 2016 presidential run. That makes him a standout from other Democrats, who have really only begun jumping on the cannabis bandwagon after Trump’s election.
The question is whether Sanders makes legalization a campaign platform when he runs for president in 2020. Because he’s totally running for president in 2020.
