Marijuana Advocate Criticized for Endorsing Kamala Harris

Published on

California Democratic Representative Barbara Lee is one of the biggest champions of marijuana reform in Congress, and has been one for many years. But now many cannabis advocates are criticizing her for her endorsement of a 2020 presidential candidate.

Last Thursday Lee endorsed California Senator Kamala Harris in the 2020 presidential race. Two days later, Lee sent out a tweet in which she attacked mass incarceration through arresting people for marijuana.

Many people pointed out that Harris is one of those people who has arrested many people for marijuana crimes. While Harris served as California Attorney General, more than 1,500 people were sent to prison for marijuana-only crimes, despite the fact that cannabis was decriminalized in the state. Therefore Lee’s endorsement of Harris seems to be at odds with her marijuana stance.

To be fair, Harris has changed her tune on cannabis and has become an advocate for ending federal prohibition of marijuana. But still some see her change of tune as a political maneuver to avoid getting attacked on the issue during the 2020 campaign.

Also, while Lee may be a champion of cannabis reform, it’s not the only issue she’s going to consider when endorsing a 2020 candidate.

But maybe it would be nice for Harris to acknowledge and apologize her anti-cannabis background a little more so that we know she’s truly made a change of heart.
