Possible 2020 Presidential Candidate Calls for Marijuana Legalization in New Book
Yesterday California Democratic Senator and possible 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris released a new book called The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which is essentially her laying out her political plans for America. And one of those plans involves marijuana.
In her new book Harris calls for the legalization of marijuana. She says that the War on Drugs has failed and that Americans need to begin reversing those policies, starting with cannabis legalization.
“We need to legalize marijuana and regulate it,” Harris writes. “And we need to expunge nonviolent marijuana-related offenses from the records of millions of people who have been arrested and incarcerated so they can get on with their lives.”
Harris also seems to be advocating for further drug reform beyond marijuana as well.
“We also need to stop treating drug addiction like a public safety crisis instead of what it is: a public health crisis,” she writes. “When someone is suffering from addiction, their situation is made worse, not better, by involvement in the criminal justice system.
However she doesn’t seem to advocate any specific changes beyond legalizing marijuana.
Harris is one of several high-profile Democrats who are considering running for president in 2020. Most of these possible candidates, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, have publicly stated their support for marijuana legalization.
Harris was fairly late to supporting legalization. In 2016, she opposed the ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana in California, and she only really began support cannabis reform last year after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to crack down on legal states.
It will be interesting to see just how much attention marijuana gets during the 2020 election. Although it seems at the moment like all the Democrats will be saying the same things about it during the primaries.
