Trump Reportedly Said Jeff Sessions’ Marijuana Views Were Like Something My Grandpa Said in the 1950s’

President Donald Trump has largely avoided the issue of cannabis legalization since taking office, and many have wondered whether they have a friend or foe in the Oval Office. But according to one Republican senator, Trump is definitely a friend.

Colorado Republican Senator Cory Gardner appeared on the Cannabis Economy podcast earlier this month to talk about legalization. During the podcast, Gardner revealed details about his conversations with the president about how former Attorney General Jeff Sessions was handling cannabis legalization. According to Gardner, Trump said we need to undo this” and “[Sessions] needs to be stopped.”

It was very clear to me at that point that there was a disagreement between the president and the attorney general on this,” Gardner said. Trump also said, I don’t like this, this isn’t something I support…This sounds like something my grandpa said in the 1950s.”

Gardner also reiterated that the president told him he supports the STATES Act, a bill that would protect states that legalize marijuana from interference from the federal government.

While Trump may have told Gardner he didn’t support Sessions’ policies and that he needed to be stopped, he didn’t seem to do anything about it. Sessions’ big move was rescinding the Cole Memo, an Obama-era policy that said the Department of Justice would not intervene in states with legal marijuana. Trump easily could’ve told Sessions to reinstate the memo. It would’ve required no support from Congress or other politicians. And yet he did not.

Trump is not so much a cannabis ally as much as a cannabis ambivalent. He probably doesn’t think he should be illegal, but he doesn’t seem to care enough about the issue to do anything about it.
