Former Baseball Star and Cocaine Aficionado Darryl Strawberry Has Some Interesting Views on Marijuana

Published on

Many former athletes often speak out in retirement in favor of professional sports allowing players to use marijuana. But apparently Darryl Strawberry thinks that’s a terrible idea.

Former Major League Baseball player Darryl Strawberry told TMZ that he doesn’t think allowing athletes to use marijuana for pain recovery is a good idea. He even went so far as to say that marijuana ruins lives.

Most people don’t understand marijuana is a drug,” Strawberry said. It’s just the beginning. Starting people off when they’re young and then it leads to everything else.”

Strawberry pointed to his own personal experience as proof. Strawberry was suspended three times during his baseball career for using cocaine, and has admitted to other substance abuse issues in the past. He said all of that began, however, when he used marijuana.

Most young people start off with marijuana,” Strawberry said. It’s a gateway. I started with marijuana when I was young, 14, 15 years old, and it led me to everything else.”

Many people criticized Strawberry for his opinion, and also noted the hypocrisy of someone who abused many stronger substances attacking marijuana. But the best criticism came from former NBA player Stephen Jackson, who said asking Strawberry about drugs was like asking someone who’s lost all their money about how to get rich.

Yeah someone should really let Strawberry know the gateway drug theory is a myth.
