Watch: For This Jiu-Jitsu Tournament, Competitors Have To Get Stoned

Published on

There’s more than one way to smoke the competition”.

In a video recently released from Vice, cannabis consumers and UFC fans converged in a LA-based jiu-jitsu tournament called High Rollerz.”

At this event, the fighters are stoned, the organizers are stoned, the audience is (presumably) stoned, and you know what they’re competing for? That’s right — a whole pound of weed.

Sure, this might sound like a Cheech and Chong sketch à la Let’s Make a Dope Deal,’ but, for these fighters, it’s serious business.

Sports and cannabis is very controversial,” notes Stantley Atkins, one of the on-site paramedics. But, it also correlates to a lack of education.”

As an example of this, the video highlights former UFC fighter Nick Diaz as a victim of regressive thinking when it comes to cannabis and sports. Diaz was given a five-year ban for smoking pot in 2015, which, as those in the business will tell you, is effectively a lifetime ban, due to the competitive nature of the sport.

Considering all the good natured joint-passing and the mugging for the camera on behalf of the fighters, a casual observer might deduce that they aren’t taking this event quite as earnestly as they might for other, more recognized competitions. Still, organizers hope that the event will create enough buzz to become a staple of the sport.

I feel like High Rollerz’ is definitely activism,” said event co-founder Matt Staut. I’m hoping this event changes the perception of the masses in general.”
