Michigan Chocolate Business Giving Out Free Cannabis with Candy Purchases

Published on

Recreational marijuana became legal in Michigan last week, although recreational cannabis sales are probably more than a year away. But one Michigan business has somewhat found a way to already begin selling legal marijuana.

Smoke’s Chocolate, a chocolate shop in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is gifting marijuana to people who purchase their chocolate. Customers pay $10 to $15 for chocolate, and then a delivery driver who’s also a registered medical marijuana patient in Michigan offers the customer some free cannabis. The chocolate shop sold out of its products in three days, and will resume business in a few weeks when finals are over since the people who work for the shop are all college students.

Under Michigan law, gifting marijuana is 100 percent legal. People can gift up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis in the state. There are still some legal questions about gifting that need to be answered, such as whether medical marijuana patients can gift their supply to non-patients, but the state seems mostly unwilling to address the issue in the near future.

Marc Bernard, the owner of Smoke’s Chocolate, previously worked in the cannabis industry in Oregon and got the idea to gift marijuana from Washington D.C., where recreational marijuana is also legal but sales are not permitted.

Now we just need to know if the chocolate is actually any good or if this is there way to trick their customers into buying a subpar candy.
