Apple Bongs and Other Improvised Pipes Are More Common than Dabs and Topicals

Published on

In collaboration with Civilized, PSB conducted an online survey with 1,004 adults in the United States and 600 adults in Canada last February to give us some insight into North Americans’ current opinions on subjects surrounding cannabis. The research groups, consisting of both cannabis users and non-users, were asked a variety of questions about their views about cannabis as well behaviors, habits, and personal experiences.

We asked our marijuana-using participants What methods of consuming cannabis have you tried?” and had them select all the methods they had personal experience with among the following: joints/blunts, pipes, bongs, ingesting marijuana-infused foods/beverages, vaporizers, homemade devices (like apple bongs” and water bottle pipes), dabs/shatter/wax concentrates, tinctures/capsules, and topical creams. Unsurprisingly, joints/blunts were the most common cannabis consumption methods tried by North American respondents, with 77% of U.S. cannabis users and 84% of Canadian cannabis users saying they had tried smoking marijuana in that way.

We also learned that more people have tried apple bongs and other improvised pipes (31% U.S., 37% Canada) than dabs/shatter/wax (26% U.S., 27% Canada) and topicals (12% U.S., 14% Canada). Another interesting result was that 66% of both groups said they had tried smoking cannabis out of a pipe and 56% of both groups said they had tried smoking out of a bong. More North Americans have tried vaporizing marijuana (36% U.S., 44% Canada) or eating cannabis-infused food/beverage (45% U.S., 51% Canada) than constructing a homemade device out of apples or other items.

Since asking which methods of consuming respondents had tried was a new question added to the survey Civilized and PSB conducted last year, we didn’t have results to compare, but our findings are in line with those of other similar surveys. For example, the 2017 Global Drug Survey found that smoking cannabis in joints is by far the most popular marijuana consumption method in the world at nearly 72%, with the next most popular method, coming in at 9.4%, being bongs/water pipes. However, we think that as North Americans learn more about the different ways we can consume cannabis, as well as the unique benefits and effects of each delivery method, U.S. citizens and Canadians alike will start to try new methods, like dabs and topicals, more often than apple bongs and other improvised pipes.
