Bill Nye Says Marijuana Was Made Illegal to ‘Oppress or Suppress Poor People’
Bill Nye the Science Guy is known for teaching people about science-related topics on his TV shows. But his new show, Bill Nye Saves the World, is a little more political in the issues it addresses. This season, Nye is taking on anti-marijuana advocates.
In the second season of his new show, Nye examines marijuana and its schedule I status. In a recent interview about the show, he gave some of his thoughts about the drug and the ridiculousness behind its illegal status.
“Marijuana was made schedule 1 to oppress or suppress poor people,” says Nye. “That’s pretty well-documented. That was certainly in the last 40 years the intent.”
Nye isn’t exactly the biggest marijuana advocate. In his interview, he never explicitly states his support for recreational cannabis legalization. In fact, he never really even advocates for legalization beyond removing it from Schedule I status. But he does believe there needs to be far more research done on the drug and wants to open doors for that to happen.
He also acknowledges that marijuana policy research has become politicized, the same as climate change, and that’s a major roadblock for reform.
On the bright side, you get to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy go into a marijuana dispensary and buy weed. So that’s pretty cool.
