Dear Naked Pyramid Climbers, Leave Cannabis Out of Your ‘Artistic Statement’
We’re probably never going to look at the Great Pyramid of Giza the same way again thanks to Andreas Hvid, a Danish photographer who recently scaled the pyramid — which is one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World — and took pornographic pictures of himself and a friend at the structure’s summit. And now Hvid is trying to drag cannabis into the illegal stunt, which he’s claiming to be an ‘artistic statement’ on Western society.
The story began last month when Hvid and his friend traveled to Cairo and hatched their plan to scale the pyramid. Hvid says it took roughly two hours to sneak into the site without security guards noticing, and then just under another half hour to reach the top of the 456-foot tomb. Once there, Hvid shot a video of the landscape that ends with his companion stripping.
Last Friday, Hvid released that clip along with photos that look like Hvid and his hiking partner decided to mount something else after reaching the top of the pyramid. Hvid claims that they didn’t actually have sex, but you can see how people got the wrong idea based on the photos.
Scaling the pyramids is “strictly forbidden,” according to Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Anany, who added that “the explicit video has sparked fury and outrage among Egyptians in general, and the officials affiliated with the Ministry of Antiquities in particular.”
But they’re blowing things out of proportion according to Hvid, who responded to the backlash in an interview with the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet. During the chat, he claimed that the stunt — which translates to ‘Pyramid Fuck’ in English — wasn’t intended to be disrespectful to the the ancient wonder but to satirize Western civilization.
“ ‘Pyramid fuck’ was the dumbest idea I could get on,” the translated interview reads, according to VICE. “Western, privileged youth at its worst. All that is missing is a joint and a bottle of vodka.”
Yeah, so apparently desecrating an ancient wonder wasn’t enough. Now he has to crap all over cannabis culture as well. Regardless of whether ‘Pyramid Fuck’ was an actual artistic statement or just a couple of delinquent tourists who didn’t realize that their prank would be poorly-received, Hvid and his partner should leave cannabis out of it. We’ve been fighting for decades to change perceptions and tear down stigmas surrounding cannabis use. We don’t need a naked hiker undoing all that hard work by having a quickie on top of a 4,500+ year old gravesite.
