Guess Which Country Has the Biggest Population of Cannabis Consumers
Ever wonder which country has the largest population of cannabis consumers? You might assume that it’s Canada, which legalized recreational cannabis last October. Or America, where 11 states have legalized recreational use and another 22 allow medical marijuana. But both of those guesses are wrong.
According to a recent report from Business Day, 19.4 percent of Nigerians over the age of 15 have consumed cannabis in the past year. That’s around 39 million people who smoke up each year and contribute to an illicit industry that has an estimated value of $15.3 billion dollars.
While cannabis remains illegal in Nigeria, the sheer amount of people that use the stuff shows there is some real desire for marijuana reform in Africa’s most populous country. And in fact, changes have been slowly coming to the African continent, with South Africa having recently legalized medical marijuana.
Following Nigeria in the second and third places are the kinds of places you might expect. In terms of percentages, Canadians consume the second most amount of cannabis with 15.8 percent of the over-15 population reporting cannabis use in the past year. Meanwhile, America falls in third place with 15 percent. But if you look at sheer numbers, you get a different story. America would top the other two countries with approximately 49 million regular cannabis consumers while Nigeria would come next with around 39 million consumers and Canada would trail far behind with a mere 6 million marijuana lovers.
