Jay Z Has Entered the Cannabis Industry

Published on

Legendary American rapper, entrepreneur, record executive and billionaire Jay Z has joined the cannabis business.

High Times reports that Jay Z will be the Chief Brand Strategist for Caliva, one of California’s largest cannabis producers. According to Caliva, Jay Z will focus on and work to increase the economic participation of citizens returning from incarceration — many of who are not seeing the monetary benefits of legalization — through advocacy, job training, and overall employee and workforce development.”

This emphasis on redressing the hardships caused by the War on Drugs (which Jay Z has previously called an epic fail”) will not be surprising to longtime fans. Earlier this year, he became a founding partner of The Reform Alliance, a criminal justice reform organization founded by rapper Meek Mill and entrepreneur Michael Rubin. The Alliance’s goal is to dramatically reduce the number of people who are unjustly under the control of the criminal justice system”.

In a statement to High Times, Jay Z said that anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level. With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos make them the best partners for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good and bring people along the way.”

The start date for Jay Z’s tenure as Chief Brand Strategist has not yet been announced. But as with anything Jay Z does, you can expect it to make headlines.
