This Art Gallery Uses a Dating App to Hook You Up with the Perfect Paintings

Published on

In a bold attempt at outdoing the competition at customer service, a tech-savvy art gallery in Georgia is using a dating app to hook visitors up with the perfect paintings.

People have less downtime than ever nowadays, so while they might enjoy the idea of visiting a museum or art gallery, many will pass because they simply can’t set aside enough hours to stroll through gallery after gallery till they see something they like.

That sort of problem is a big issue for large galleries, like the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, which has more than 15,000 pieces in their art collection — more than anyone can see in a single visit, and many have no idea where to start.

That’s why Julia Forbes and Ivey Rucket of the High Museum put their heads together to fix the problem. After considering a few options, they ultimately came up with a solution from an unlikely place: the world of dating apps.

Forbes and Rucket’s Heartmatch app works much like Tinder. The app shows users a series of art pieces that are currently on display at the High Museum, and then asks them to swipe right on pieces they like or left on ones they don’t. After swiping through the options, the app generates a museum map that will lead visitors to the pieces they selected.

Heartmatch doesn’t contain every piece on display at The High Museum. Right now, it includes 100 of the collection’s highlights. This means you won’t necessarily be directed to the venue’s deep cuts, but chances are you’ll catch a few more pieces than what you’ve swiped right on as you make your way through the exhibits.
