Review: Soothe Body Balm by Shanti Wellness is Just as Soothing As Its Title (and Ingredients) Suggest
With so much noise, both positive and negative, about the medicinal effects of hemp, CBD, and whole plant cannabis, it’s often hard to discern what constitutes a truly holistic healing substance and what could be just plain swag.
Luckily, I got to experience the former with Shanti Wellness, a simple yet elegant wellness product line that should please anyone with high standards when it comes to cannabis-infused topicals.
As the body’s largest organ, the skin absorbs almost everything that it comes into contact with. So whether it be the air we breathe, the foods we eat, the hair products we use, or the skin products that we put on our body, we need to be extremely conscious of all of the micro and macro ingredients that go into the products that we lather onto our bodies. If you can’t pronounce it or don’t know what a certain ingredient is, there’s a good chance that it’s either a little sketchy or at the very least, something you’ll want to look up before using.
Shanti’s ingredients are clean, concise, and effective: beeswax, full spectrum hemp oil, coconut oil, lavender oil, and eucalyptus oil.
The balm’s main ingredient — full spectrum hemp oil — contains cannabinoids, not the least of which being CBD. The non-psychotropic compound has been shown to alleviate pain, seizures, inflammation, and so forth, but in a topical like Shanti’s Soothe Body Balm, it’s particularly useful for dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. CBD is known for its pain relieving, adaptogenic properties, as well as for its ability to encourage homeostasis in our body. CBD reduces tension, relieves stress, combats anxiety, and can be incredibly effective as a treatment for sleeping issues. Similar to THC in its adaptogenic properties, CBD knows exactly where in your body it’s needed, and it adapts accordingly to relieve what’s ailing you.
Beeswax, another of the balm’s main ingredients, has been used for hundreds of years to treat various skin conditions, including diaper rash, dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema. Beeswax is an anti-inflammatory that relieves pain, and it is known to moisturize and heal dry or cracked skin. It also reduces stretch marks, lowers cholesterol levels, and protects the liver.
Coconut oil, like hemp oil, is an abundant source of essential fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is required for brain development and aids in repairing tissues — which can be especially helpful if you’re looking to lather up muscle soreness.
Lavender oil is both an antiseptic and has anti-inflammatory properties, so, beyond its pleasant, flowery scent, it’s also useful for everything from bug bites and minor burns, to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and for restlessness. And lastly, eucalyptus, which is also an anti-inflammatory, can be used to treat arthritis, cold sores, minor cuts, and burns. Eucalyptus has been known to reduce fever, clear blocked sinuses, and to help with opening up the respiratory system.
After a week using the Soothe Body Balm, I can confirm that the best things in life are often the most simple. This clean, non-greasy, mildly-sweet lavender smelling balm is soothing on my skin, calming on my nerves, and seems to heighten the awareness of all my senses.
While reporting from the blazing, ash-filled air of the Malibu Fires, the Soothe Body Balm replaced any needs for moisturizer, lip balm, or body butter, and was an absolute lifesaver for my dry, ashy skin. The fragrance of Shanti Body Balm is as light as is its smooth and creamy texture, so men and women should both enjoy it.
Each two-ounce jar of Shanti Body Balm contains 800 milligrams of hemp CBD oil and retails for $70. Since it spreads nicely and is immediately absorbed into your skin, after your first few initial uses, a little bit should go a long way. The balm can offer relief from symptoms like tight, sore muscles, stiff joints, and tense neck or shoulders, and can also help release stress.
I’d recommend this product to anyone with dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, and for anyone looking for different ways to incorporate CBD into their health routine. As a yoga instructor, holistic health and nutrition consultant, and someone who has made it a point to consume consciously, I wholeheartedly and highly recommend the Shanti Wellness Soothe Body Balm.
